The beginning of 2025 is a pivotal moment for Senate Speaker Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska and Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia. It is a time when Poland's six-month presidency of the EU commences, amid several challenges, including threats to democracy, the migration crisis, and numerous economic problems faced by many European countries.
The Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland will be key participants in Poland's presidency of the EU Council. European parliamentarians will gather in Poland to discuss the continent's most important issues.
We will collaborate with the European Parliament and host participants of interparliamentary conferences as well as members of specialized committees from the parliaments of EU member states, the heads of both chambers pointed out.
The coming years will be crucial for discussions and decisions that will shape the future of the European project. For the EU to overcome the challenges it faces, public support for proposed changes is essential.
This can only be achieved through wide discussions involving as many citizens of member states as possible. Solutions developed in this way will have a better chance of broad acceptance and successful implementation, as emphasized in the joint statement of both chambers of the Polish Parliament.
Europe, its future, shape, and values, is a shared topic and a common challenge for all Europeans. Democratically elected parliaments are the natural place for discussions on these fundamental issues. This is why the parliamentary dimension of the presidency is so important.
We hope that during the meetings hosted by the Sejm and Senate, key issues for the entire European Union will be identified, and solutions will be outlined.
We want interparliamentary cooperation to set the tone for debates both at the national level and within the EU.
We strongly believe that the results of these debates will strengthen the democratic legitimacy of the European Union in addressing the challenges it faces, the marshals added.
